Local East Coast Triathlon Festival Named National Championships

Day’s events foster elite competition and inclusion

Richmond, Va. (March 25, 2018) – On May 6, The East Coast Triathlon Festival returns to the Innsbrook Office Park in Glen Allen, VA.  The East Coast Triathlon Festival again proves Richmond to be a sought-after endurance event destination.  Now in its sixth year, the race has been named the Under 23 (U23) Elite National Championships.  The East Coast Triathlon Festival includes elite races for the top professional and junior triathletes in the world as well as youth and adult age group races for the local community.

“We are very excited to welcome the world’s top professional, junior athletes, and amateur athletes from all over the world to Richmond,” said Michael Harlow, race director. “All in one day, local athletes will be able to race on the same course as the best in the world as well as watch these amazing athletes compete – there is nothing like this in the country.”

Harlow anticipates 700 professional athletes, elite junior athletes, amateur kids, and adults will compete across four separate race formats. The races include a kid’s fun race for ages seven to 15; a super sprint distance for amateur youth and adults; the Junior Elite Cup; and the headline CAMTRI Sprint American Cup professional event. The Junior Elite race will draw the top 13 to 19 year olds from across the country – forty states were represented last year.  The CAMTRI Cup, which is the U23 National Championships, will draw professional athletes from around the world – eight countries were represented last year. Harlow expects more than 1,300 athletes and spectators present to either compete or watch the day’s activities.

“The day’s events are not just about elite competition. The race encourages an active community through triathlon. We were very purposeful in structuring the race distances to enable inclusion, from beginners to elite athletes,” Harlow stated.

Kelli Lewis, a local athlete, competed in the event in past years while her daughter, Morgan Lewis, raced the junior elite race and her son, Jacob Lewis, raced in the Kid’s Fun Tri.  Lewis comments, “Our family had such a wonderful time this weekend at the East Coast Triathlon Festival!  It was organized and run so well!  You all thought of everything, and it was a huge success.”
